Madonna As Postmodern Myth: How One Star's Self-Construction Rewrites Sex, Gender, Hollywood and the American Dream
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (29 October, 2002)
Author: Georges-Claude Guilbert
Average review score:

Makes Madonna Make "Postmodern" Interesting
Like so many, I find Madonna interesting. And I agree with the positive reviews of this book -- I really like it. The unique contribution here is the way the author discusses Madonna in ways that make "postmodern" an interesting, understandable, ans useful concept. And believe me, I am no fan of academic writing of or about the posrmodern. But this book can be highly and widely recommended.

Very Interesting Overview of Madonna
Madonna:alot can be said about Her but Boring isn't one of them.thsi Book Explores the Many things that relate too the Artist&personna that is Madonna.this Book is Challenging&also puts Madonna into a Complete Perspective from start too finish.just like the Woman Herself it will keep you wondering more&what lays around the Corner.

Final evidence of Madonna's superior intelligence
In this book GC Guilbert shows how absolutely everything Madonna has ever done is packed with clever references. He doesn't mean that she's a plagiarist, far from it: she just uses her vast knowledge of (popular) culture, in a "postmodern" way. A fascinating read.

Oasis- What's the Story: What's the Story
Published in Paperback by Blake Pub (December, 2001)
Author: Ian Robertson
Average review score:

Robbo delivers with first-hand account of life with Oasis.
Ian Robertson's "What's the Story?" is a fascinating account of life with Oasis. Robertson focuses on his personal dealings with Oasis, instead of relying on the typical assumptions made about Oasis like most who have written about Oasis. Robertson, their former tour manager, delivers his story with a simple, honest, style that keeps you riveted as you see the Gallagher brothers swallowed by fame. Instead of slamming the band that eventually let him go, Robertson focuses on the respect he had for the talented and loyal Noel Gallagher, while allowing the reader insight into the bizzare emotional behavior of Liam. Robbo never directly attacks the younger Gallagher, he even notes that Liam has a caring side to him that is usually not present in most rock stars. However, Robbo still relives accounts of times that Liam's behavior drove Oasis to the edge. An excellent book, Robertson puts his heart and soul into telling the reader what life with Oasis was like for him without becoming overemotional and writing a biased, selfish book. (Which is what many in his position would have done.) Definitely five stars.

Creatively written by Robertson as it really happened.
Robertson gave this book to people as he saw the scenes of Oasis. With his candid first hand experiece of dealing with the Gallahgers, Robbo wrote about the highs and lows of the life he lived. He made us realize that fame might not be what most people think about it.

Totally Top for the manchester boys!
A great book no matter if your a huge fan that thinks you know EVERYTHING about the band or a newbie, its not a big info book its more a "this is what happened in this number of days" kinda book.

Love, Janis/a Revealing New Biography of Janis Joplin With Never-Before-Published Letters
Published in Hardcover by Villard Books (September, 1992)
Author: Laura Joplin
Average review score:

More Than A Tribute
When Janis' lips opened the world fell at her feet due mainly to the fact that the emotion and power which her voice conveyed spoke numerous volumes to many of her listeners. I was three years old the night Janis' life ended and the power of her music speaks as much to me now as I did to so many people so many years ago. This book shows the best and worst of this music legend. It reveals her misgivings, her heartbreaks, her worries, her sorrows and her emense joys. It shows you Janis from the inside, and in her very own words. You can feel her world rumble and rattle from her early beginnings as a blues singer in Texas and feel the earth give way underneath her only to create the mountain which pushed her up to the pedestal where many now see her. This is a heartfelt and moving biography by someone who knew more than Janis the icon; she knew Janis the loving sister. These insights into her thoughts allows for a deeper understanding of the woman behind THE VOICE

Janis Joplin's life was full of color!
This book by Laura Joplin explained Janis' true life, not just her attitude on the stage. This book is definitely wroth reading!

This book is an inside look at the life of a legend!
I was born long after the days of Janis Joplin and her brand of hippie rock and drugs. But her music, once I discovered it, moved me in ways previously unimaginable. I found this book, written by her sister, to be touching and real. Janis was an extraordinary person, this book proves that. It also brings you behind the scenes, to her secert life that caused her so much pain. This book made Janis real to me. Laura Joplin did a fantastic job of educating the world about the one of a kind Janis Joplin and her turblent life. Her talent, like this book, will never be forgotten!

Madonna Superstar: Photographs (Schirmer's Visual Library)
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (June, 1991)
Author: Karl Lagerfeld
Average review score:

Lots of great pictures
The book isn't very long and contains very few pages with actual words on it, but I didn't buy it for a story, I bought it for pictures of Madonna. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it was made near the end of 1987, so it only has pictures and information on Madonna from 1982-87. In the back portion of the book it does however have a short year by year biography on her. The pictures are black and white or colored. Many of them are from her different concerts. The book also includes some information on the earlier movies Madonna starred in such as Who's That Girl? and Shanghi Surprise. There are alot better books on Madonna that you could get, but for the price this is a great book. The pictures are beautiful and it is a welcome addition to my Madonna collection.

Gorgeous photos of the Pop Queen!
I bought this book when it first came out in the very early 90's. Madonna looks gorgeous in the photos. All of the photos are beautifully shot and Madonna looks fabulous! I was the biggest Madonna fan back then and loved this book to death. now, pushing 30, I am still in love with this book because the photos are so amazing!

You won't be disappointed! I think the best photo is the one where she's kissing the mirror. Great photographic techniques!

Madonna's most glamourous photographs
The photographs in this book capture the "glamour" Madonna perfectly. The pictures have a very crisp feel to them, at times verging on remote; Madonna's glamour shots, though largely reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe in this book, do not have the same "inviting" allure that Marilyn had. I suppose this is because it is unmistakable that Madonna is a powerful woman who must always be "in charge" and is in complete control of her career and her image, whereas Marilyn Monroe projected an air of vulnerability for which Madonna is probably without the capacity. But Madonna is still a beautiful and at times "exotic" creature.

Several pictures in this book had previously been published in magazines, the cover shot, for example, was once the cover for Life magazine. Many pictures from that same photo shoot are reproduced here, with the most touching being the "group hug" between Madonna and about seven siblings. A few out-takes from the "Like a Virgin" album cover photo shoot are included in this book as well.

The era of Madonna's career that is covered in this book is somewhat small, considering that she has now been in the public eye for nearly 20 years. All these pictures seem to be from the the years 1984 to 1987.

My First Year As a Teacher
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Signet (July, 1996)
Authors: Pearl Rock Kane and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation
Average review score:

25 outstanding 1st year stories!
After finishing my first year teaching, I can relate to many of the stories submitted in this book. Each story is unique and reminds us why we have chosen to teach. It helps us first year teachers to understand that we go through during our first year is unique and the stuggle will help us be stonger and better teachers!

Fantastic Stories
I am currently enrolled in the business college at the school I attend but have recently grown tired of worrying about "maximizing the bottom line". Recently, I have seriously contemplated teaching in order to "maximize peoples' lives," which I find much more rewarding and important. With that in mind, I have bought a few books about teaching experiences so I can know what it is actually like.

This book has a collection of 25 stories related from first-year teaching experiences. The stories cover a spectrum of wealth, class and racial circumstances which was nice because it gives you a feel for the slightly different struggles each circumstance gives. This book gave me more hope that perhaps teaching is the road I want to go down. Through all of the trials, there is joy in the end for these teachers. I would be naive to think that the case for all teachers but if one is to teach, it should be to get a certain level of joy from it (I think).

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a taste of first year teacher jitters and how it IS possible to deal with them. I only I hope that the teachers-to-be, in school today, deal as well in their circumstances as the teachers in this book did...it's a great book.

Inspiring
It's easy to forget what it is that makes you want to be a teacher. This is a book that reminds you. It is a collection of 25 stories, chosen from over 400 entries, told by real teachers about their first year. No two are alike - some are about particular memorable students, others about some of the hardships that are encountered as a novice teacher. I particularly liked one story about a first-year elementary school teacher whose problem was not his students, but his fellow teachers who were resentful of his success.

The sampling of stories in this book give a good idea of what kind of problems one might encounter as a teacher, yet they also describe how rewarding the profession can be. I am a student of education, and reading this book only reinforced my decision to become a teacher. For anyone who is thinking about teaching, or for veteran teachers who need a reminder of the importance of their profession, for anyone with an interest in education, I would recommend this book.

Nico: The End
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Press (September, 1993)
Author: James Young
Average review score:

Move over Celine
Having been a Velvets/Nico fan since 1968, I somehow ignored this book until recently, perhaps because of my annoyance with the status the Velvets have attained over the years. (They really were a better band when nobody else had heard of them....) Anyway, to complete my collection I suppose, I bought this book a few weeks ago with very low expectations. What I discovered was a beautifully written book, picaresque, dark, satirical, poignant...James Young writes like a Celine for the twilight of the 20th century. I would eagerly buy another book written by Mr. Young. In short, this book is a masterpiece.

The Icon's Last Days
"Nico-The End" is definitely a better, more intelligent piece of writing then the hard to find "Songs they Never Played on the Radio". "The End" tracks the last years of Nico's life; it is sad and seedy, but has some incredibly funny parts to it. What we get here is a glimpse into Nico's many live shows and her relationship with others in the 80's, particularly the author, her band The Faction, her fans, and John Cale as well as some others. There is part telling about the struggle to make her final recording, "Camera Obscura" and finally her unexpected death. I totally recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the absolutely facsinating life of VU chanteuse and proven solo artist Nico.

A MUST READ
This is the most hilarious "rock" book I have ever read. I found myself turning the pages in complete fascination -- bizzare performances, wild parties, weird tour experiences, encounters with luminaries like John Cale, a visit to the motel where Tom Waits used to stay ... etc. And you have to admire Nico for sniffing out drugs anywhere, even behind the then iron curtain & getting high regardless. The funniest part is where Nico takes her first trip on Angel Dust, he he, I'm laughing just thinking about it. The writing style is great. My book has a subtitle not mentioned on this amazon.com page: Songs They Never Play On The Radio, but perhaps that is the UK edition. You don't have to be a fan of Velvet Underground to enjoy this book, it stands on its own feet. Finger licking good.

Now You Know: The Story of the Four Freshmen
Published in Paperback by Tiare Publications (July, 1995)
Author: Ross Barbour
Average review score:

BETTER LATE THAN NOT KNOWING
My copy was the first edition, published 1995. Since then there have been two or three MORE Freshmen personnel changes, resulting in (sez Bob Flanigan, and he ought to know)"the best vocal blend in our(Four Freshmen)history." This is both the strength of the book and the weakness of any 52-year-old vocal group: the almost mandatory changes, and the tough task of keeping track of the whys and wherefores. This Ross Barbour does to perfection.

Barbour also intends "Now You Know" as a personal paean and thank-you to the late Stan Kenton, and this he brings off with class and accuracy. Life on the road for a jazz group, a necessary evil if they want to maintain recording contracts and sales, has eaten up the best, Kenton included. (The joker in the deck is, jazz itself does not "sell" in America, at least not in sufficient strength to afford its musicians more time at home with families.)

The Four Freshmen, we learn, were free of drugs, although booze is hinted at, and both certainly were problems with Kenton and his bands through the years. The FF, like the Kenton outfits, have largely been white guys (and girls) singing and playing for mostly white fans, and this has been a knock over the years, at least on Kenton. None of this is touched on in "Now You Know," perhaps wisely.

But no matter. As a chronology of the sound and the songs, "Now You Know" is must reading for every serious jazz fan.

Music of 50's-60's
This is the book for you if you first fell in love in the 50's or 60's. It gives you a time line, from the perspective of one of the original Four Freshmen, of what went on in those great years. Love songs were really love songs. The Four Freshmen have put together a book of music that covers the whole spectrum - not just 50's & 60's, but right into the year 2000 with the 21st group combination still out there singing (they are a lot younger now - 20's & 30's - but haven't lost the blend of voices that made them a favorite on jazzman Stan Kenton). Ross Barbour chronicles the whole thing and, if you were there, you can't help thinking back to what you were doing at a particular moment. It's not fancy writing, but hits home - hard.

Four-ever
I never want to have to stop reading this book. I love it

Oasis: Supersonic Supernova
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (October, 1997)
Author: Michael Krugman
Average review score:

Insightful for serious fan; fully informative for new-comers
Let's face it. The story of the meteoric rise of Oasis and the sibbling drama surrounding the brothers Gallagher is both complicated and simple. Complicated, because how do you sift throught the tabloid haze, the drug hysteria, the fights, the break-ups and make-ups and make sense of it all? Simple, because this is what happens when the right band comes along with the perfect songs and the charasmatic force to make people desperately intrigued... yeah, it's a big explosion. This book follows just that logic and takes you along for the perfect ride through the Oasis universe. A little humour and a crisp narrative help as well. The hilarious photo captions are a bonus. Be here now...

The Latest From the Sharpest Wit in Print
A real laugh and look at the absurdity of pop star life as only the Brits can do it. Documents the rise and rise of the the Gallagher boys and their infamous antics. Nice "behind the scenes" and tales of the mono-brow brothers' very entertaining bickering. One of my favorite authors. If you don't know his book "Generation Eccch" yet, read it for more sharp-witted criticism of pop icons of the '90s.

Give this guy 160 pages, he'll give you a great story.
If you really wanna find out HOW Oasis became so big, this is the book for you. It tells it all, from the Gallagher's impressions on America, the world, and everything, to personal experiences. Provides a good laugh and is a great eye-opening-mouth-exploding-drooling experience. Only for devoted Oasis fans.
